I'm a homeowner in a coastal area, 1 mile from the ocean with temperate climate year round, pretty much 50-65 with frequent foggy days. I am looking to reroof my asphalt shingle roof. I have painted gutters from the previous owner that are still in good shape that I'd like to keep, and they're likely basic materials (so my guess is aluminum or galvanized)
I'd like to understand what precautions or upgrades I should opt for on the materials that would strike a balance between my not-luxurious asphalt roof/house but also protect against the coastal salty air and fog. I think stainless steel nails are a common recommendation. But for the flashings, my prospective roofer is pushing copper, which is probably the most durable material, but seems out of place and overboard for an asphalt roof with dimensional shingles.
Are stainless flashings a good middle ground and if so, are there any concerns with it being in contact with the gutters (ie. mixed metals touching)?
Or am I completely overthinking this -- should I just go with stainless nails and standard painted flashings? I just wouldn't want the flashings to fail significantly before the expected 25 years for my roof. In this case, any concerns with stainless nails with standard painted flashings (probably galvanized steel?)
Can anyone recommend how to strike a balance on durability without going overboard?
