For occasional leaks due to wind-driven rain, I’m thinking of using one of these $30 moisture meters on the roof underside to map out where the water is or has been. Hopefully the readings will show a clear pattern and point me toward the source.

My question is, How might this idea NOT work?

I poked around the Web but couldn't pull up something useful on this method.

Thanks.

It might, but never having done this myself that's just a guess. I know lots of flat roof people use thermal cameras to find moisture under the roof.

Thanks.

One other thing I read for sloped roofs is putting different colored chalk on different areas and checking the leak color.

Now, with this morning's rain I heard the drop-drop sound of a leak on one of the two main HVAC duct returns. This one is likely a gutter problem.
