Hi,
I was wondering if somebody could help me out. I am a home owner and am doing the roof myself. I decided to go with a raw wooden planks instead of plywood due to it being way cheaper. I was wondering if I could preserve the wood with something ie stain or tar and not have to worry about the ice and water shield not sticking. I can't seem to find any answers online so I decided to turn to the pros for help. Thanks for any tips and help.

You can stain or seal the wood all you want, but ice and water guard that's not what that's for ice and water guard is to prevent ice dams from building up on your roof. So that being said, if you live in an area where it gets below 30 degrees often in the winter time or where ice dams are common yes you need ice and water guard it's a worthwhile investment
