I've always done the work myself but i got an email from a large company asking if i would be interested in sub contracting for them. My question is how much is a fair price for me to charge them to remove and install shingles per square?

Well there's a whole lot of variables...Pitch,amount of layers,complexity,etc..A fair price is one you can make money with,I guess you know that.The best thing would be to sit down and discuss rates.Also every area has their own pricing,talk to some subs in your area and see what the going rates are.Good luck and take care

I find that if you shingle every day and ez walk ranch one layer rip is a half hour off and a half hour on. If you don't shingle every day, it'll probably take you longer, this is a topic of great debate at CT. Know your production rates and your hourly scale and start adding from there for pitch, layers, difficulty, access, penetrations, etc... I'm assuming you have an hourly rate. If you'd like I can post a blank form I use and then just input your piece rates per line item.
Personally I'd ask them to send you their price list and then make changes as you see fit and send it back. Never make the first offer if you don't have to. |

I was buying a car once and the guy was a typical salesman. He asked me what the car was worth to me. I told him that I didn't want to play this game, tell me what he can let it go for, save us some time and let's get out of here. He pressed again, how much are you willing to pay he asks. I told him not to play the bull chit games and just tell me the price. A third time he asks, so I told him $1,000. The 2 year old SUV is worth $1,000; then I said Now what's your counter offer?
I didn't buy the truck because I tend to not get along well with sterotypical salesmen. As contractors we are somewhat forced to give our offer first in the form of a proposal. However I am starting mroe to try to feel out customers on their budget, what the other bids they may have gotten are at, what they think the roof might cost. I am asking these questions so I know the customer's thinking and if I can price out a good job or an economy job. I specifically sarted on my commercial estimates since there is such a huge range of options and a huge range in pricing. No reason to spend 2 hours pricing oout a tear off if they are only in the market for a restoration or patch job. By getting their loose budget I am able to essentially allow them to make the first offer... But still most of the time my proposal really is the first offer. When ever I am recruiting new employees I ask them how much they want to earn. When ever I am hiring a new sub I ask them for a price list. I've saved myself a ton of money this way. |

I wish there was a stranded pricing system for this but there is not. most contractors in my area are pay around $35 for a 1 layer t.o. and reshingle that's f-ing nuts

$35 is pretty darned good if they are employees not subs. After tools, equipment and Comp... Fogetaboutit.

I'd say for a walkable roof 120.00 would be good for off and on. Maybe another 10.00 if it had too be staged or was all cut up. When I sub that is what I get and could not get by for any less after my overhead. Insurance, gas, comp, tools, and of course all the other bills in day to day life.

I agree In NY i was getting good money most around 70-100 sometimes $110 if it's cut up but down here in Georgia it's a whole different world. cause most contractor's don't care if u have insurance or not most go to home depot and pick up a crew from there. and the one's who do care are only paying as low as 28.50 per sq T.O. and reshingle plus with all the storm chashers here they pay these mexican crews nothing to do the work. Which I think it's B-S. I hate those jackasses

Well god bless you, I hope you find a way to support yourself. The guy I sub off.....when I do. Is a stickler like myself. We exchange pics of EVERYTHING. He cares about his business. I must have all my insurance up to date for every job, so on and so on. Good luck to you!!!
