Pushing tax credits?

I got a call from a prospect today that cancelled a contract with another contractor for 2 reasons.

They pressured him to make a decision on the spot and offered a big discount and told him about the tax credit.

They told the customer that he could get a tax credit for 30% of the total job because he was going to install solar powered vents.

The next day the customer asked how he would document this for tax purposes he didn’t get any good answers. He was worried about getting nailed for tax fraud.

Then he checked with the BBB and found out that they had 48 complaints. So he decided he wanted out of the deal and called me for an estimate.

What is your take on this?

Re: Pushing tax credits?

The other guy fed him misleading and superfluous information.

It is not 30% of the entire job, just of the qualifiable materials, up to $15,000.00, plus requires the manufacturers statement of acceptance or whatever it is called to be applicable for the credit/rebate.

Re: Pushing tax credits?

Pushing tax credits is not a bad thing and not a hard thing to document. 30% of the job cost for solar fans is a flat out lie. Solar fans are actually not eligible for the $1,500 credit. I sell alot of solar fans and have looked into it, contact energy star and various manufacturers.

Re: Pushing tax credits?

From my interpretation,

Solar is 30% of materials, Labor is not included...

Specific shingles are eligible for up to $1500 of materials only...

Metal is up to $1500 as well...

Ed posted a list of eligible shingles in this forum a couple of weeks ago..

Re: Pushing tax credits?

There must be a manufacturer's certification of compliance as well.

Re: Pushing tax credits?

So you are telling me that the customer is getting a tax credit for replacing the shingles on their roof. Is there a web site explaining this.

Re: Pushing tax credits?

They have to be energy star rated shingles not just regular shingles

Re: Pushing tax credits?

Most every roof we shingle qualifies. So do the tubular sky lights and solar fans we install.

A few still want a dark roof but it's not a good idea here.

One house the HO had been working in the attic for some time and noticed a big change when we removed wood shake and installed qualified shingles. His attic was still much hotter than before. Just because it qualifies does not mean it's better. Tile and TPO are better and don't qualify.
