Re: Insulation with roofing jobs
Around here lowes offers free rentals on the machines, as I said in an earlier post I wouldn't spend $5k for a machine we'll use a dozen times per year.
I simply can not believe how cheaply insulation guys work for. It amazes me how they can make any money at those rates. I'm on par with home depot's pricing, just a wee bit less. |

I recently went up against an insulation specialist. To me they look like hacks. They didn't want to add soffit or ridg vents. The owner had a major condensation problem so I got the job. Also the were going to add more insulation to the kneewall in the attic of the bungalow. That would have created a double vapor barrier. I don't think most insulation guys do good work and they don't understand ventilation. It should be easy for us to outsell them. So far I'm not too concerned about pricing. I'm just going to charge what works for me. My roofing supplier lets me use their machine for free. |

Re: Insulation with roofing jobs
I contacted a few of my suppliers and none sell insulation. No suprise there. So I contacted a few insulation suppliers and they all tried pushing their current buyers as subs onto me. Now I am not against subbing stuff out, but something sooooo easy we can do in-house and do it with style.
As far as the problems with insulationg uys, you're right. I've had to fight through alot of bad advice through the years "but my insulation guys said..." "Yeah but your insulation guy caused this problem by blocking your overhangs with insulation. Now I am here to fix it, and you still trust his advice over mine?" I got one job we are going to start soon. She just had someone else do the insulation due to a mold related problem. Oh well, I got a 12k roof anyways. I'm not greedy. But in chatting with her, she's not pleased at all and I have alot of clearing of her overhang to do. I will be installing the certainteed invisavent soffit panels... so when we cut the plywood soffit we're taking out leaf blower and blowing out the insulation that's blocking the overhang. |

Re: Insulation with roofing jobsQuote:
A did roof last year for a lady that owned a 50 year old bungalow. This was before I started offering insulation. She told me she was getting estimates for insulation. A few of the contractors told her the wanted to spray foam on the underside of the roof deck and block off all vents. I advised her not to do it. She hired a guy to blow in cellulose. She asked me to put in a vent and leave the nails loose so that they could blow in behind a kneewall. They were also supposed to blow into the wall cavities. A month later a got call. She had a gut cleaning leaves off her roof and he noticed the nails had not been pounded in. She asked me to come back and do it which I did. She said she was having problems with the insulation company. They could not prove that the cellulose had fire retardant in it. She said the house still felt cold. Well when I took out the roof vent I found that they did not blow in any insulation behind the kneewall. I doubt if they blew it into the walls they way they were supposed to. Last time I talked to her she said she was going to have to contact an attorney. She said they were disrespectful to her on the phone and never gave her proof that the insulation was fire retardant. Re: Insulation with roofing jobs
Any thoughts out there on offering additional warranty on roofs that are insulated, given that an insulated roof will probably last longer (and prevent ice damming)?

Re: Insulation with roofing jobs
I'm currently giving 10 years on a shingle job if I can do it my way, insulation or not. If they want more they can buy the certainteed 5 star for me. I'm not comfortable warranting a job longer than 10 years.

Just take about 3’ of trim coil and make a cylinder and secure it with self tapping screws. I decided to put a barrier around all recessed lights even if they are rated for insulation. Even the ones that are rated for insulation can overheat and burn out the bulb or cause it to flicker. |
