hi there uk slater
found this forum looks interesting, i am from sunderland in the UK and i prefer slating which i have been able to do mostly but lately it seems i am doing more tiling on sites which i can honestly say i am not very fast and i am looking at ways to speed up and im interested in the hytile tile cutters because one of the slowest things i think is tiling valleys with a sthil saw ive also noticed on their website a rafter marker for i presume marking out the battens but dont understand how they work does anyone know and where can i get them in the UK

Re: hi there uk slater
Hi Leeroy and welcome to the site,i also do a lot of slating work in the Liverpool and Manchester area,i seem to have done things the other way round to you where i started using concrete tiles first then went on to slating.
I prefer using a skil saw(petrol) when cutting valleys i have used hytile cutter or similar but i only used this when i was cutting plain tile(10 x 6), but may be ou should chat with Aussie roofer on here because i know he is a big fan of this method. Cheers Dave |

Re: hi there uk slater
hey lee
one of the guys on here posted a link under the hytile thread. they are selling them from europe from 750approx plus vat and delivery. i think this is very expensive. saying that i would pay that for one. when i go to oz i usually bring one back with me. much cheaper. a goldcard version of the hytile cutter is much lighter and can be bought there for about 400 oz dollars. about 100 euro to ship. all in all the best toolin the world. i am biased of course. when i find myself in a cloud of toxic silica dust (which is a cancer causing dust when exposed to excessive levels) when using the consaw, i think to myself ...... i would pay 1500 to get that tool. its that good. |

Look on www.hytileusa.com they ask 998 us dollars. So I think it's not that expensive for a tool that is that good and helps you avoiding silica dust exposure. Check out the videos on www.hytile.com.

Re: hi there uk slater
we cut clay roof tile with a high speed grinder and diamond blade. with slate we cut them with either a slaters hammer and stake or some guys use a esco slate cutter. I prefer the stake.

Re: hi there uk slater
Hi Jim,
Using the grinder is not only very bad for your health, with all the dust produced, but also very expensive with the changing of diamond blades all the time. Using the Hytile Tile Cutter will do the job without the mentioned issues. Check out the videos and see for your self. |
