Hello form Southern Utah.

Hi, I'm Mike. I started roofing the summer of 1989 in Las Vegas. Now I'm in St. George Utah. The weather is about the same here. We work year round. Work is slow this year--the slowest I've ever seen it. Most of what we do is new constriction but now we take what we can get, re-roofs, Mtn. Cabins and some repairs.

We are doing TPO on a new house now. None of the three of us know what we are doing (although together we have over 80 years combined roofing experience.) The WeatherBond sales rep stoped by. I got the impression he is about as clueless as we are. I think I got the basics down now and we will install a good roof. It's nice to learn something different but it would be nice to learn from someone who has done it before. I found this site googleing around to teach myself to weld properly.

TPO is great. It's so much easier than doing tile or modified. Right now I'm the only welder. I hope we can sell a lot of this stuff. It's much better than the elastomeric coatings that we will have to bid with on these southwestern flat roofs.

Re: Hello form Southern Utah.

It's been raining for about 12 hours and it's probably going to rain for another 12. That's a good rain for here. We do get a real good one every few years. One of the last ones took out a lot of homes. http://www.utahfloodrelief.com/need.html It rained for weeks and really hard in the higher elevations. It was a very sad sight to see.

My phone isn't ringing. I'm going to kick back and enjoy some home brews.

I prefer the hot air welder to the torch. I've done a lot of torch down and started a few fires blowing out new construction. I never burnt anything down or had any real damage but I hate torching on someone's home. Lath paper, foam and rough OSB are too combustible for comfort. With a welder I can concentrate on what matters.

Hi Joe i like the sound of ' I'm going to kick back and enjoy some home brews.'
Im guessing you mean 'Beer' as having a brew in the north of England means having a cup of tea lol
Cheers
Dave

P.S. I prefer the beer!

Re: Hello form Southern Utah.

Yeah, I brew my own beer.

We did get a few calls for repairs. I spent four hours on a house today. Poorly fastened hip cuts had slid down and the exposed felt had burned out. Also a plastic cover on a power vent had burned out and blown away. It was never even connected to electricity. I just repaired the felt, secured the hip cuts and instaled some O'Hagen vents. The HO said he had had many problems with the electricians. The roof was worse. Type 1 felt with tacker stapled 2 inch head laps, poor flashing and a lack of proper fastening. The laps have shrunk to about one inch now. I hate working on a roof that really can't be fixed. Worse yet the tile is defective. When I working for Willis in Las Vegas we trashed thousands of squares because of hairlines that were not as bad as this house is. About one third of the field is broken tile. I believe Monier owes them about 40 squares.
