cedar roof underlayment

whats the proper underlayment for cedar shakes. is it tar paper at each layer or can i use these new products such as trace underlayment . the old way seems to work fine when done right...some contractors are pushing the new type of underlayment

any info on install would be great

Re: cedar roof underlayment

I have not heard anything about that Trace product, if you could provide a link, I would research it for you and get some other roofers feedback on it.

But, the shake-liner felt has been more than adequate for the past 100 years or so, so I doubt it is a very big improvement regarding the cedar shakes.

Re: cedar roof underlayment

I have been using felt for over 20 years with no problems, its cheap and lasts a very long time when installed properly.

Re: cedar roof underlayment

i agree... felt would be fine..he has been pushing the "better underlayment "
because the roof will not be put on for some time and we need to protect the plywood from water.... and the synthetic would not wear out for months where as the feltr might wear out pretty fast.
its more more money but provides better temporary protection

Re: cedar roof underlayment

Not sure what the price is of the synthetic but, we would ice shield entire roof to protect from elements and then use the half rolls of 30# not sure if this is standerd but has always work for us.

Re: cedar roof underlayment

30lb felt is fine but you should also use cedar breather. We install cedar roofs all the time.

Re: cedar roof underlayment

ok .. so we all agree felt is fine.. but would it be bad to use synthetic with no cedar breather... attic will be vented well.

synthetic would be used because i cannot get my roofer on the job for a month.

thanks

Re: cedar roof underlayment

I am not a fan of synthetic at all. I have felted roofs with 30# and left them for a month without a problem. Why not use cedar breather ?

Re: cedar roof underlayment

oh.. could I use cedar breather for protection in the meantime?...instead of underlayment. and then i would totally set up for when they start roofing.
or do you use felt and cedar breather...and be done with it!
thanks for the correspondence
