I have installed solar panels and solr shingles on various projects in and around chicago. I see nothing wrong with it when it's properly done. First off don't dare install new panels on an old roof, unless you want to be removing those panels again in 5 years to repalce/fix the roof. 2nd, put a very good long lasting roofing product on the roof if you are going to put up panels because you don't want to be removing them.
Solar panels are like roof garden, you definetly don't want to go cheap on the roof. If you're considering either you should consider a premium roofing system installed by a very very qualified roofer. I guess you're a roofer though so I hope you know what you're doing.

Velux has a new hot water heating system out, basically a solar panel with a flashing kit (not sure if the skylight flashing kits are the exact same size but same idea pretty much). Took em long enough.

I agree. We hope to sell roofs with all our PV systems. I think all installers should sub out the flashing of the stand offs. Most don't and they just put lag bolts through the roof. Here where mold is not much of a problem they can get away with it most of the time.
PV systems are a hard sell here where power is as low as 5 cents a KWH. There are many stand alone systems for remote cabins though. Gird tied systems can only be sold to the environmental conscious people. Thermal on the other hand is a great buy. |
